Help for Afghan Women

To the Editor:

Bob Herbert is right that the situation for women in Afghanistan remains dire (columns, Oct. 25 and 28).

What Afghan women continue to call for, in addition to education, health care and other fundamental human rights, is peace. Every woman we spoke to during a visit to Afghanistan last week was eager for an end to the fighting.

Critical lifesaving services continue to be provided by dedicated aid workers. Their work is made possible by the courageous Afghan women who have stayed in the country to provide medical care and establish home schools to educate girls who remain barred from traditional schools.
