New York, NY - The Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children expressed its shock and sadness at the killing today of four International Rescue Committee (IRC) staff in Afghanistan. Three international staff members, all women – Shirley Case, Nicole Dial, and Jackie Kirk – and Mohammed Aimal, an Afghan driver, were killed in an ambush in Logar province as they were traveling back to Kabul. A second driver was critically wounded.
"The Women's Commission grieves the loss of these young women and their driver who dedicated their lives to bringing education to children in Afghanistan," said Carolyn Makinson, executive director of the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children. "They worked in extreme conditions, and we will miss their passion and commitment."
The IRC has suspended its programs in Afghanistan indefinitely.
