Out of sight, out of mind. There is no better way to characterize the plight of the hundreds of thousands of refugees worldwide - most of them women, children, and the elderly - whose suffering is compounded by physical, sensory, or mental disabilities. WE DID IT!!!! Thanks to an outpouring of support and phone calls yesterday, Senator Grassley backed down and did not offer his amendment to the Immigration Bill! Grassley's amendment would have stopped abused spouses of those with non-immigrant visas from being able to petition to get independent work authorization and legal status separate from the abusive spouse. Senator Klobuchar’s Amendment to the Comprehensive Immigration Bill passed by voice vote- which means survivors of domestic violence are protected! Thank you for making this possible!

New Yorkers, we need you RIGHT NOW! THIS JUST IN from Capitol Hill: "We just got word that Senator Grassley will introduce an amendment to the immigration bill today that would seriously gut protections for victims of domestic violence. If you have 2 minutes to spare this morning, we could really use some calls to Sen. Schumer’s office from NY constituents. Call 202-224-6542 (Schumer’s DC office) and ask the Senator to vote against the Grassley second degree amendment to Klobuchar 1 (no bill number but Grassley is calling it an amendment to reduce fraud in the VAWA self petitioning process and to require USCIS to consider credible evidence related to a self petitioning application). This amendment would fundamentally undermine protections for victims of domestic violence while empowering abusers." Let us know you called by commenting. THANK YOU!
