    Associate Director, Gender and Social Inclusion

    The Associate Director – Gender and Social Inclusion is an expert in the fields of gender, diversity, and inclusive humanitarian action, representing and positioning the organization as a leader in inclusive humanitarian research and advocacy across the sector. They are recognized and called upon by humanitarian, gender, disability, development, human rights, academic, UN, and government actors to contribute expertise on the protection and empowerment of women, children and youth with diverse identities and from marginalized sub-populations, including (but not isolated to) those from sexual and gender minorities and those with disabilities.

    Responsibilities include: Organizational strategic planning; developing the vision and strategic direction for the WRC’s work on gender and social inclusion; supervision of staff working on disabilities, LGBTI persons, adolescents and youth; identifying solutions for more efficient and effective program management; contributing to organizational strategic planning and funding strategies relating to social inclusion and resilience; high-level advocacy, coordination and communication in the humanitarian sector, including with states, UN agencies, NGOs and local organizations; monitoring and evaluating program activities, including outcomes towards the WRC’s wider organizational goals and objectives.

    The position is full-time, based in New York with field travel (approximately 25% of time).

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Coordination and Leadership

    • Participate in, and as appropriate lead, WRC strategic planning and thought leadership initiatives.
    • Lead the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the WRC’s work on gender and social inclusion, ensuring alignment with wider organizational mission, strategic plans and objectives.
    • Represent the WRC in high-level human rights, development, and humanitarian forums, including participating in working groups and committees at global levels (e.g. Gender & Resilience Working Group; TAAP Inclusion Community of Practice; GPC Protection Mainstreaming Task Team).
    • Working with the Senior Director of Programs, contribute to organizational strategic planning and decision-making, including participation in relevant steering committees and working groups.
    • Identify strategic opportunities for global advocacy on gender and social inclusion, and coordinate and collaborate with the advocacy and communications teams to advance these activities.
    • Engage directly with donors to promote partnerships and development opportunities, in alignment with the strategic vision of the organization.
    • Update Senior Director for Programs on a regular basis about relevant program activities and developments, and report to board members, as requested.

    Program Implementation

    • Lead the WRC’s global research, advocacy and capacity development activities on gender and social inclusion and resilience-based approaches.
    • Conduct gender and social inclusion analyses and design inclusion strategies for existing WRC programs and projects, including those focused on sexual and reproductive health, GBV prevention and response, cash and livelihoods, women’s participation and leadership, and youth and adolescents.
    • Provide technical support on gender and social inclusion to other WRC programs and collaborate on project development in strategic sectors for the organization.

    Program Management

    • Develop and monitor the implementation of programmatic work plans covering multiple projects and grants.
    • Support proposal development to ensure coherent programmatic funding across multiple projects and funding sources.
    • Evaluate program effectiveness and outcomes towards the WRC’s wider organizational goals and objectives.
    • Support program staff to prepare donor reports in collaboration with the finance and development teams.

    Staff management

    • Supervise program staff and consultants working on disabilities, LGBTI persons, adolescents and youth, including work planning, training, performance review and quality assurance.
    • Capacity development of the direct reports as well as other program staff.
    • Supervise additional projects and program staff as deemed appropriate.

    Financial Responsibilities

    • Prepare budgets and spending plans and authorize expenditure to social inclusion, resilience, adolescents, youth, and disability program grants, and others as indicated.
    • Direct gender and social inclusion, resilience, adolescents, youth, and disability program grants, sub-grants and expenditure, identifying appropriate budget realignments as needed with the finance and development team.
    • Raise development needs as appropriate with the Senior Director for Programs and the Director of Development.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Master’s Degree in human rights, public policy, or related social development fields;
    • Minimum eight years progressive work experience on inclusion in humanitarian action;
    • Minimum of three years of program management experience;
    • Experience advocating for issues within high-level multi-stakeholder forums in the humanitarian system;
    • Ability to recognize and respond to complex situations involving external stakeholders, within both the technical and political fields of humanitarian action;
    • Demonstrated high levels of independence in program management, including identifying effective solutions for budgeting and development challenges, managing high workloads in the team, and risk mitigation when working with local partners;
    • Proven track record conducting research, analyzing issues relating to inclusive humanitarian action, and writing reports and policy papers;
    • Knowledge and expertise on gender, diversity, and social inclusion. 
    • Skills in providing training, technical advice and/or conducting participatory evaluations;
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills including grant writing, public speaking and presentation expertise;
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and work well under pressure in a fast-paced and detail-oriented team environment;
    • Good computer skills: facility with MS Word, Excel, and email/internet software.
