Senior Writer and Communications Officer

The Senior Writer and Communications Officer reports directly to the Director of External Communications and works closely with all staff across the organization. This role will be instrumental in helping implement an ambitious strategic communications plan aligned with WRC’s overall vision and strategy designed to increase the organization’s profile among key audiences, including media, donors, governments, and national and international policymakers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Write website content, weekly communications to WRC supporters, fact sheets, one-page summaries for reports and other WRC publications, OpEds, press releases, and other media communications as needed.
  • Copyedit all email and website content, fact sheets, and fundraising materials. Proof all external-facing documents.
  • Work closely with the Director of External Affairs on managing and maintaining WRC’s editorial calendar to ensure coordinated and strategic launches of WRC reports, products, and events.
  • Write all talking points, speeches, and opinion pieces for the executive director.  
  • Manage all editorial content for WRC’s flagship fundraising event, the Annual Voices of Courage Awards Luncheon, preparing talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material.
  • Manage the hiring and supervision of publication production consultants.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of seven years of experience in communications/marketing and editing.
  • Outstanding communications skills, both oral and written, and the ability to grasp and communicate substantive WRC policies and programs to key audiences.
  • Spectacular copyediting and proofing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in professional writing, editing, production, and management for print and digital media.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team with the confidence to take the lead and guide other employees when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Knowledge of international humanitarian and human rights work is required.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and goals of WRC.
