    The Women's Refugee Commission works to improve the lives and defend the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and adolescents. The organization works to effect policy change with broad, worldwide impact.

    The intern will assist the Protection Program by supporting the Livelihoods Initiative's global research study on livelihoods for displaced populations. The purpose of the study is to identify both gaps and promising practices in the way the international community designs and implements livelihodos programs for displaced women and youth. The goal is to provide practitioners, policy makers, and donors with the tools and information necessary to improve practice on the ground and promote programs that lead to increased economic opportunity and self-reliance for displaced women and youth.

    The intern will assist in final editing, publishing, and launch of the Women's Refugee Commission's Livelihoods Field Manual (estimated February 2009) containing the recommendations, promising program models, and tools identified in the three-year global study.


    • Assist with the final stages of publishing the Women's Refugee Commission's Livelihoods Field Manual.
    • Take a leadership role in the planning and preparation for manual roll-out trainings in Liberia, Uganda and Thailand, including assisting with the development of training materials.
    • Support program staff in the research, drafting and editing of key documents.
    • Attend weekly supervision meetings to update supervisor on progress and obstacles.


    • College/graduate student with social science, business or development background (preferred).
    • Experience/interest in refugee and conflict issues.
    • Excellent research, writing skills and analytical skills.
    • Knowledge of international affairs.
    • Flexible work attitude: the ability to work productively in a team environment and independently.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
