    Detention and Asylum Program Intern, Washington, DC

    BACKGROUND:

    The Women’s Refugee Commission works to improve the lives and defend the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and adolescents. As an advocacy organization, the Women’s Refugee Commission is dedicated to bringing about systemic changes that lead to greater respect for the rights of uprooted women, children and adolescents. The Detention and Asylum Program works to protect the rights of women, children and families seeking protection in the United States. The organization strives to effect policy change with broad, worldwide impact.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Detention and Asylum Program (DAP) internship will be a full-time or part-time position based in the Women’s Refugee Commission’s Washington, D.C. office. The intern will provide administrative, programmatic and logistical support to the Detention and Asylum team.

    ** Please note this internship is for summer and is located in Washington, DC.

    PRODUCTS AND ACTIVITIES:

    • Conduct research on key issues for the detention and asylum program.
    • Help draft materials for meetings and for the Commission’s web site.
    • Cover hearings and conduct research as needed on relevant detention and asylum issues.
    • Assist with legislative and policy analysis
    • Assist with legal research, administrative, and programmatic functions.
    • Other program tasks as needed.
    • Reports directly to the DAP Director.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Graduate or law student with immigration, international affairs, legal, gender, social science or family law background.
    • Experience/ interest in gender, asylum and refugee issues.
    • Excellent research and writing skills.
    • Excellent analytical skills.
    • Knowledge of immigration, or child welfare field and community.
    • Flexible work attitude: the ability to work productively in a team environment and independently.
    • Solid computer skills.

    Timeframe: flexible with dates but 3-month commitment required beginning in May/June
    Location: Washington, DC
