    The Women's Refugee Commission advocates for laws, policies and programs to improve the lives and protect the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and young people—bringing about lasting, measurable change.

    The Women’s Refugee Commission was established in 1989 to address the particular needs of refugee and displaced women and children. The Women's Refugee Commission is affiliated with and is legally part of the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. It does not receive direct financial support from the IRC.


    The intern will provide overall support to the Women's Refugee Commission’s communications department. The internship is a great opportunity to work closely with professional communications staff, develop strategic communications skills and learn about the humanitarian field.


    1. Write, edit and update copy for the website and blog. 
    2. Organize logistics for lectures and other events.
    3. Write and edit copy for print materials as needed.
    4. Update database of media and other contacts.
    5. Source and obtain permission for photographs, video and music for use in Women’s Refugee Commission multimedia projects.
    6. Communicate with outside vendors as needed.


    • Graduate student with communications, film, international relations or public relations background or interest.
    • Excellent writing and editing skills.
    • Excellent research and analytical skills.
    • Excellent communications skills.
    • Web- and media-related experience a plus, including Joomla.
    • Must be willing to do administrative tasks.


    Reports to: Program Officer, Communications
    Position: Communications Intern – Spring/Summer 2012
    Location: New York, NY
    Timeframe: March 1 –  August 31 (negotiable), 15 - 20 hours a week
