    The Women's Refugee Commission advocates vigorously for laws, policies and programs to improve the lives and protect the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and young people—bringing about lasting, measurable change.

    The Women’s Refugee Commission was established in 1989 to address the particular needs of refugee and displaced women and children. The Women's Refugee Commission is affiliated with and is legally part of the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. It does not receive direct financial support from the IRC.


    The intern will provide multi-media support to the Women's Refugee Commission’s communications department. She/he will work with the director of communications and the communications officer. The internship will provide the opportunity to work closely with communications staff and attend internal organizational meetings and other meetings and events related to refugee issues. The focus of this internship is to help produce video advocacy projects: providing support in filming and editing.


    1. Film and edit for video advocacy projects for website.
    2. Update Women’s Refugee Commission social media pages, including Flickr and Youtube.
    3. Research other websites for innovative ideas.
    4. Source and obtain permission for photographs and music for use in Women’s Refugee Commission multimedia projects.
    5. Create photo essays for the website.


    • College or graduate student with communications, film or public relations background or interest.
    • Experience with film, video and editing.
    • Excellent writing and editing skills.
    • Excellent research, data collection and analysis skills.
    • Excellent computer skills, including Word and PowerPoint. Quark, InDesign and/or Photoshop a plus.
    • Excellent communications skills.
    • Web- and media-related experience a plus, including Joomla.
    • Must be willing to do administrative tasks.

    Position: Communications Intern – Fall 2010
    Reports to: Program Officer, Communications
    Location: New York, NY
    Timeframe: September - December (negotiable), 10 - 25 hours a week
