    LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    • To understand the research to action model and how research translates into advocacy among different stakeholders for SRH in humanitarian settings.
    • To engage in inter-agency processes for policy-setting and advocacy around SRH in crises.
    • To understand the current state of access to family planning and SRH supplies in humanitarian settings and next steps to improve access, among other SRH-related topics.

    SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

The SRH Intern will support efforts under the Inter-agency Working Group (IAWG) for Reproductive Health in Crises. Specifically, the intern will:

    • Support the IAWG Voluntary Contraception and Logistics sub-working groups on meeting preparations, communications, research, and advocacy.
    • Support IAWG events during the summer and fall.
    • Assist with developing an online survey for field-based SRHR practitioners, analyzing results, and drafting a report.
    • Undertake research on humanitarian roster systems and produce a report on the findings in collaboration with the IAWG Training Partnership Initiative’s (TPI) Manager. The report will be used to inform the operationalization of the IAWG-TPI’s roster system.
    • Undertake research on SRH capacity development needs and gaps in crises settings to inform future IAWG-TPI programming in collaboration with the IAWG-TPI Manager.
    • Draft and copy-edit reports, communications and other external materials, as needed.
    • Support the development and writing of proposals for the SRH team.
    • Attend relevant meetings and conferences.
    • Other tasks as required.

ABOUT THE SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROGRAM:

The Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Program promotes quality, comprehensive reproductive health care for crisis-affected women, men and youth in the areas of maternal-newborn health, family planning, STI/HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. The SRH Program:

    • Ensures that reproductive health is on the agenda of humanitarian assistance organizations, development agencies, policy makers and donors.
    • Leads the Inter-agency Working Group (IAWG) on Reproductive Health in Crises through housing the Secretariat.
    • Advocates for the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Reproductive Health to be implemented in the earliest days of an emergency, and integrated into emergency preparedness plans.
    • Examines the needs, risks, and capacities of specific population groups—such as very young adolescents and persons with disabilities—to enhance access to quality SRH services.
    • Pilots community-based models and other innovative approaches to meeting the SRH needs of women and adolescents affected by crises.
    • Produces tools and field-friendly guides on the MISP, maternal health, family planning, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), gender-based violence (GBV), emergency contraception and emergency obstetric care for humanitarian workers to better implement SRH activities in emergency settings.
    • Advocates for the international community to undertake a comprehensive multi-sectoral approach, which protects women and girls from sexual violence and traditional practices in displaced settings.
