    Rights and Justice

In conflict and disaster, refugees' rights are often disregarded. Most fundamentally, refugees have a human right to to flee their country if they are in danger, and to claim asylum elsewhere. It is illegal and immoral to unnecessarily detain them, or to force them to return to danger.

    Policy Recommendations

Refugee women and children must have:

    • A safe haven outside the conflict area.
    • Adequate protection from violence and abuse.
    • Equal access to all benefits and services, which often requires adapting programs and distribution mechanisms.
    • Equal access to citizenship, and the benefits it confers.
