Trump’s actions “violate international human rights law,” said Michelle Brané, director of the Migrant Rights and Justice program at the Women’s Refugee Commission, and will exacerbate the administration’s current policies of intentionally undermining the asylum claims process. “This is about the continued gas-lighting of the country to perpetuate fear for political gain—and that is morally repugnant.”

She cited a report by the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and Women’s Refugee Commission, which concluded: “Family detention cannot be carried our humanely. Conditions at the Artesia and Karnes facilities are entirely inappropriate for mothers and children. Detention traumatizes families, undermines the basic family structure, and has a devastating psycho-social impact.”

"It isn't that it's an unnecessary expense," says Michelle Brané of the Women's Refugee Commission. "It's not even that the contractors involved are charging exorbitant fees. The issue here is that it costs money to care for these children. The administration chose a tactic that was specifically intended to be cruel, and is also extremely expensive."

The Lantern Tour, as the brief five-city itinerary is officially dubbed, was in many ways a pleasant 20th-century throwback. Organized by the Women’s Refugee Commission, the benefit gathered Browne and fellow Americana luminaries Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Shawn Colvin.

Proceeds will benefit the New York-based Women’s Refugee Commission.
