Celebrating Champions:
Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls

April 30, 2015

Violence against women and girls escalates dramatically when conflict and disaster force people to flee their homes. The protections of family and community break down, leaving women and girls at great risk of sexual violence, abuse and exploitation. Providing safe environments is crucial for women to rebuild their lives.

At our 2015 Voices of Courage Awards luncheon, we honored champions who are dedicated to ensuring the safety of refugee women and girls.

Honorees

Mama Adey for website

Adey Ali Dahir, popularly known as Mama Adey, has tirelessly worked for decades to ensure that Dagahaley Camp, one of the five Dadaab Refugee Camps in Kenya, is a safe haven for Somali women and girls. As a member of CARE Kenya's Refugee Assistance Programme's "Committee against Violence," a community-based support group, Mama Adey, now 70 years old, has worked since 1992 to end sexual and gender based violence, child marriages and female genital mutilation.

Diana Nammi for website

Diana Nammi, a former Kurdish refugee, is the founder and chief executive of the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation in the UK. She works to prevent violence against women in refugee communities, such as "honor" killings and advocates for this violence to be treated as the crime that it is and never justified in the name of culture. Simultaneously she works to ensure that women from minority communities have equal access to the law and their human rights.
