A Bay Area Asylum-Seeker Miscarried In ICE Detention. There Are More Like Her.

A 26-year-old San Jose woman learned of her pregnancy and miscarriage in a Central California immigrant detention facility. A San Francisco Chronicle article quoting WRC’s Zain Lakhani details how the woman may be part of a broader pattern.

“We have substantial evidence to suggest that these requirements [for detained pregnant and postpartum women] are not being followed,” Zain Lakhani, the commission’s director of migrant rights and justice, said at a Sept. 9 conference for US policymakers and philanthropists. “Pregnant women are being detained in unprecedented numbers, in appalling conditions, and without access to adequate food and medical care.”
