Refugee Self-Reliance

As the number of people displaced by conflict and crisis reaches record levels, and the length of displacement increases, finding sustainable solutions for refugees is critical. The Women’s Refugee Commission advocates for self-reliance programming as early as possible in emergency response. We develop technical resources for designing livelihood interventions with the aim of restoring refugees’ dignity, expanding their opportunities, and reducing dependence on external humanitarian aid.

Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative

The Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative, led by the Women’s Refugee Commission and RefugePoint, seeks to promote opportunities for self-reliance as a way for refugees to regain agency over their finances and futures, while supporting the peace, stability, and prosperity of host communities. The program assesses the impact of livelihood programs over time and measures whether these programs are assisting refugee households to become self-reliant.
