WRC Mourns the Passing of Board Co-Chair Ambassador C. Steven McGann (ret.)

New York, NY – The Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) today expressed its deep sadness at the passing of its Board Co-Chair, Ambassador C. Steven McGann (ret.).

In response to the news, Sarah Costa, executive director of WRC, issued the following statement:

“On behalf of all of us at WRC, we are stunned and so deeply sad to hear of Ambassador McGann’s passing. Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and everyone who was touched by Steve’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian assistance, security, and justice. At our annual luncheon here in New York City two weeks ago, Steve spoke passionately about the importance of public service to advance human rights globally. WRC was extremely fortunate to benefit from Steve’s expertise gained over a remarkable career. From the Asia-Pacific to the United States, to Africa and Latin America, Steve changed the lives of countless families and communities. His passing will be felt across the globe.”

WRC Board Co-Chair Alexandra Arriaga further stated:

“All of us who strive to make a difference are mourning this tremendous loss. Steve was a highly effective leader and champion for justice, equality, and humanitarian and human rights for all. He was an especially effective voice for people living in seemingly forgotten regions of the world, consistently calling attention to their struggles and insisting on support to meet their urgent needs. Steve offered wisdom with humility interspersed with humor, and never let his retirement get in the way of his continued work. For me, it has been a great privilege to serve as his co-chair and glean from his professional expertise, lived experience, and invaluable insights. We remain inspired by his example and will miss him immensely.”
