WRC Statement on ICE Miscarriage Data

Washington, DC — Today, the Women’s Refugee Commission released the following statement in response to reporting from The Guardian that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has no data on miscarriages from pregnant women who have been detained after October 3, 2025.

“Pregnant, postpartum, and nursing women have heightened healthcare needs that ICE is required to monitor if they are going to detain them,” said Zain Lakhani, Director of Migrant Rights and Justice at the Women’s Refugee Commission. “What this data shows is a systemic failure to monitor and track urgent pregnancy-related healthcare concerns and ensure that those women receive proper treatment and care. This failure is why WRC created its own Detention Pregnancy Tracker, but external tools can never replace essential monitoring and care inside facilities.”
