Displaced Women and Girls: A Data Ecosystem Mapping

Published

Over 41 million women and girls were displaced within the borders of their own countries in 2025 as a result of conflict, violence, or disasters, and nearly 13 million were displaced abroad as refugees or people in refugee-like situations. Displaced women and girls often face some of the most acute risks to their lives, safety, and well-being. A better understanding of the characteristics, resources, needs, and priorities of women and girls in displacement is essential to ensuring gender sensitive, effective, and equitable humanitarian response. Identifying where support can be most impactful is more necessary than ever, as the total number of displaced women and girls is the highest ever recorded, yet the financial resources available to support them are plummeting at an increasing speed.

This paper provides an overview of existing data on displaced women and girls, identifying knowledge gaps and data quality concerns, as well as potential ways to address them. It also considers the ways that data are currently being used to inform programs or policies, and to guide and monitor financial investments and their results on displaced women and girls.
