Were You Separated From Your Child?
Toll-free phone numbers are now available for families separated by the United States government between July 2017 and June 2018. Families can use the numbers to reach a court-appointed Steering Committee that is conducting broad outreach to locate families and provide them with additional information.
The Women’s Refugee Commission, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), Justice in Motion, and the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, formed this court-appointed Steering Committee for the Ms. L v. ICE class action lawsuit. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the lawsuit against the US government in 2018 to stop the government from forcibly separating parents and children as they entered the United States.
In 2019, a judge in California expanded the class of plaintiffs to include parents and children who were separated between July 2017 and June 2018. The judge also ordered the government to provide the Steering Committee with contact information for each family identified. This group of families had not previously been identified through the lawsuit.
Members of the Committee have made thousands of phone calls to try to find families in this expanded class, but have been unable to establish contact with many families. To add to the challenge, hundreds of these parents were deported from the United States without their children.
