    Women are disproportionately affected by disasters: 90 percent of those killed in the 1991 cyclone in Bangladesh and 80 percent of those killed in the 2004 tsunami were women and girls. For those who do survive, there are devastating, long-term effects on their sexual and reproductive health. In this new report, the Women’s Refugee Commission looks at activities to improve sexual and reproductive health and better prepare for disasters in Haiti, Uganda and South Sudan.

    Refocusing Family Planning in Refugee Settings

    Access to family planning services is a human right and neglecting their provision can have serious health consequences. This summary report is based on a multi-country baseline study to document knowledge of family planning, beliefs and practices of refugees, as well as the state of service provision in select refugee settings in Djibouti, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia and Uganda. The goal of the baseline study was to support program planning and service delivery, and subsequently increase family planning uptake among women, men and adolescents.

    An inter-agency MISP assessment

    CARE, International Planned Parenthood Federation, Save the Children and Women’s Refugee Commission conducted an inter-agency MISP assessment in Haiti, four months following the 2010 earthquake. The purpose the assessment was to examine the extent of MISP implementation as a response to the January 12 earthquake in three areas that were severely impacted by the earthquake.

    Dale Buscher, director of protection at the Women's Refugee Commission, has an article in Refugee Survey Quarterly (Vol. 29, No. 2). The edition is devoted to gender equality and refugee women. In the lead article, “Refugee Women: Twenty Years On,” Buscher describes progress made since UNHCR released its first Policy on Refugee Women in 1990, including in the areas of reproductive health and gender-based violence, and outlines issues that require further attention, such as the gap between knowledge and practice, and the protection risks women continue to face in camps.
