    Hazel Reitz served in the State Department’s Bureau for Population, Refugees, and Migration for 14 years. She was the Bureau’s liaison officer with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for 8 years, overseeing the U.S.’s institutional relationship with that organization and the use of the United States’ contribution of over a quarter of a billion dollars annually.

    In 2004 and 2005, she took on responsibility for monitoring UNHCR’s program for Darfur refugees in Eastern Chad. She was the Bureau’s focal point for refugee women and refugee children for five years. For these efforts, she received the Women’s Commission Voices of Courage award in 2004. She was also the recipient of the State Department’s Warren Christopher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Affairs. Ms. Reitz served as Public Affairs Officer during the first six years of her tenure in the Bureau.

    Prior to her PRM work, Ms. Reitz spent 20 years overseas.  She served at the U.S. Observer Mission to UNESCO in Paris for 8 years. She spent two years setting up undergraduate and graduate programs for the Universities of Maryland and Boston for U.S. military and civilian personnel in Bonn, Germany. She assisted with the re-establishment of the American Embassy in Kampala, Uganda, after the fall of Idi Amin. She worked for CARE’s relief and development program for 3 years in Chad.

    Prior to her marriage, Ms. Reitz served for ten years in the British Foreign Service in London, Ivory Coast and Colombia. She now lives in San Francisco with her husband, Peter.
